Ego

The word that came to mind as I read Chapters 16 & 17 was ‘Ego’. It is a word normally used in a negative way. I found the following definition on Answers.com (only one of 3 definitions is shown):
a. An exaggerated sense of self-importance; conceit.
b. Appropriate pride in oneself; self-esteem.

The meaning (a) was the one I was thinking about. It is easy to see how Randolph, Sybil, Cordellia, Archie and Lucille could be labeled as having big Ego’s. I would say that Zedediah could also be said to have a ego – but from the meaning (b).

But what about ED and Jake? I suggest that Jake came to the creative school with an (a) Ego and events are beginning to redefine his Ego as (b). Can you site events in Chapter 16&17 that would support this?

Also, I think the Author is using Winston as a symbol for something else going on in the story. Do you see a connection?

While Jake does have an ego, it has begun to shrink. He has been thinking about himself as a bad kid and trying to make people think that, but he is hesitant to leave wit’s end because of the kids there, showing he is begging to weaken. He also showed a softer side with the dog and the fritillary. Basically, jakes ego seem sot be turning into self esteem as he spends more time at wits end.

Also, like I was saying, Jake is changing. He wants to stop spiking his hair. He hates his clothes. He is softening up. He’s singing and acting. Basically, he’s softening up. I wonder what’s going to happen to Jake next. Maybe he will actually changing his wardrobe or hair, or stop his hair spiking. Most likely the latter.
