How right is Ryter?

We seem to finish books at the worst times. We finished reading LBITU just as spring break started. Time to get the brain working again.

The Last Book in the Universe, was the 4th book we read together. Previously we read Something Upstairs, The Witch of Blackbird Pond, and Al Capone Does My Shirts (our first blogged book).

As I looked back at some of the quotes in the "Ryter Right?" section, I realized that each of them could have been said by a character in one of those previous books and it would have seemed entirely appropriate. (I also thought about how the quote that appears at the beginning of Something Upstairs - what is that name for that again? - would fit in very nicely along with Ryter's quotes.)

Can you take each of the Quotes from 'Ryter Right?' and assign them to a character in one of the previous books and note when that character could have said it? (Try to use all three books at least once.) Also, give the Something Upstairs quote to someone from LBITU - but not Ryter.

"You must remember the past because it brings you here, to the right now, today, this moment, and from here you can look to the future."
Caleb, From Something Upstairs
He would say it around Kenny, talking about the past, near the beginning of the book.

"Take away memory, the sense of who we are, and human beings revert to animal behavior, and animals are easier to exterminate then humans."
Hannah Tupper, from The Witch of Blackbird Pond
She would say that at the point where Kit and Prudence were visiting her house, because of the common beleifs about her that the towns people had.

"...many a man has died looking for treasure that doesn't exist."
Piper, from Al Capone Does my Shirts
She would say that probably to Moose, when looking for a convict baseball

"I don't suppose anybody really knows how bad a thing is until it actually happen."
Nate, From The Witch of Blackbird Pond
I think he would say that when making the delivery of the windows, talking in a jealous way to Kit.

"The only real treasure is inside your head...Memories are better than diamonds and no one can steal them from you."
Mrs.Flannagen, from Al Capone Does my Shirts
She would say that to Moose after they got to the house, which she would suspect to help him calm down after the move.

"Things change. You never know a thing for certain until you've seen it with your own eyes."
Kit, from The Witch of Blackbird Pond
She would say that to her aunt and uncle, after arriving, because of the big scenery change.

I liked Ben's selections. Before he wrote them we went back and reviewed each book. We were surprised how many details we had already forgotten. (The list of characters in the Blog was a big help with recalling Al Capone....)

We had the hardest time remember the specifics of Something Upstairs.

I could not remember the Author of The Witch of Blackbird Pond, but as we talked about it I could recall many more details then with Something Upstairs.

I only helped him with the Quote given to Hannah Tupper. That is a very dark quote. Thinking about her experience being kicked out of one place and treated badly in another seemed to make it an appropriate thought for her.

Ben cleared up the issue of what the quote at the beginning of a book is called - Epigraph.

"Those who forget history are condemned to relive it," seems to me like a quote that Lanaya would make speaking to a meeting of proovs. She could use the quote in a poractical way to refer to the elimination of 'probes' for the normals. She could also use it to admonish the Proovs for the way they treat normals.

I've done my quotes and attributed them to a character. I'm at a bit of a loss because I didn't read the Witch of Blackbird Pond recently enough to use any of these characters. See what you think.
Pardon Willinghast would say.."Take away memory, the sense of who we are... when he shows the key chain to Kenny and is plotting to have Kenny kill Caleb. He would say this because he wants to give Kenny a reason to do his bidding without argument and pretend that Kenny has a way out of feeling remorse.
Kenny would tell Avi that "I don't suppose anybody really knows how bad a thing is until it actually happens" when he is trying to get Avi to listen to his story in the author's explanation.
Spaz would say the epigraph from Something Upstairs "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" when writing his book at the end of LBITU.
From Al Capone, I thought that Piper would say "Things change. You never know a thing for certain until you've seen it with your own eyes." This would come at the end of the book when Piper understand more about the Flanagan family and becomes more human.
Her dad the warden would lecture Moose saying that "Many a man has died looking for treasure that doesn't exist" when admonishing Moose and company.
Moose's dad would tell him that "The only real treasure is inside your head." He was really good at calming Moose down.
Moose would tell his mother when talking about Natalie that "You must remember the past because it brings you here, to the right now, today." He would say this to give his mom hope when she was in despair over her daughter,
