Chapoter 11- Medal Of Freedom
I was surprised to have difficulty finding a single place listing all Presidential Medal of Freedom winners. It was first awarded (in its current form) by JFK in 1963. The 'best' source I could find was Wikipedia.

Many interesting things happen in this chapter. The centerpiece is Adams exploring Yosemite. A map of Yosemite
and a map of the High Sierras help to see where things mentioned in the chapter are located.

Chapter 2 - 1915 Pan-Pacific Exposition
This World's Fair ran from February through December. It celebrated the completion of the Panama Canal and rebirth of San Francisco following the earthquake 10 year before.

The Exploritorium Museum of Science is housed in the only building remaining from the Exposition.

I like the family tree very much. I was having trouble keeping track of all the family names and this makes a great reference tool.
Any thoughts on why E.D. would be named in particular for Edith Wharton? My limited knowledge tells me that she was not a mystery writer like the mother Sybil but that she is her favorite writer. What would a successful mystery writer admire enough about another published author to name a daughter for her?
