Dreams

Today is the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I Have A Dream” speech delivered in Washington DC, August 28th, 1963. Ben and I wondered what he would be thinking about the progress toward his dream for America if he were alive today. It would be easy to say that he would be discouraged, but he would have experienced a very proud moment yesterday when Barack Obama was nominated as the Democratic Candidate for President of the United States. That would have been unthinkable 45 years ago.

Hollis Woods also has a dream. What is her dream? How do you think she feels about the prospects of achieving that dream? Are there obstacles to that dream that are of her own making?

Hollis’ Woods dream – as evidenced by her ‘X’ picture is to have a family, but at present it would seem that she is feeling like that is unlikely. She constantly makes reference to the Regan’s. Her picture of Steven reminds her of what it feels like to have a brother. Yet she has run away from the Regan’s. We do not know why she ran but we know that she left that place where she was feeling part of a family. If that could not work then she must be thinking that it cannot work in the future either.

Clearly Hollis has a problem expressing herself. She only seems to be able to relate her emotions through drawing. She does not like to look people in the eye because she is afraid they will be able to ‘see into her soul’. (paraphrased, Chapter 1 p 5) Frequently she makes reference to something she was going to say but she kept her mouth tightly shut instead. What is she afraid to let people know about her?

She probably has good reason to be wary of people but her inability to connect to them will make finding a family even harder.

Hollis wants a family. You can tell that from x. Her W picture is a picture of a mother, a father, a son, a daughter, and a house. When asked about the W, she says wish, or want, or wouldn’t it be loverly.

Also, when talking about the picture of Steven, Hollis says she thinks she finally knows what it would be like to have a brother, a happy felling to her. It seems she’s curious about having one, too. I wonder what picture she’d draw for that.

Anyways, she seems to run away from other families. Is there a certain kind of family she wants, or not? I hope we find out.
