We are reading the last two Chapters of “A Day No Pigs Would Die” today. Ben and I are convinced that Haven Peck will not survive until the end of the book. We are less certain about Pinky. Before reading, I would like Ben to contemplate three different endings:
- The Hollywood ‘Feel Good’ ending
- The ‘Cold Harsh Realities of Life’ ending
- The ‘somewhere in the middle with a glimmer of hope’ ending

First off, let’s look at the different views of these endings concerning pinky’s fate. For the happy-go-lucky Hollywood ending, pinky would turn out to be pregnant, and would not be killed. However, they could also get confused, and think that she’s pregnant, when she’s really not. For the dark-and-depressing ending, pinky would turn out to not be pregnant, and would be pork. Otherwise, they would think she’s not pregnant, and would find out too late. And, for the this-isn’t-sad-or-completely-happy ending, when Roberts father died, he would take over the job, and would let pinky live, no matter what.
Let’s look at Robert’s father on the same three views. In the oh-hoorah-what-a-happy-day ending, Robert’s father will live for the rest of the book. For the oh-man-this-day-couldn’t-get-any-worse ending, he is going to die. For the bland middle ending, he is just sick, but not fatally sick.
I think that the middle ending for pinky and the sad ending for Robert’s father make up the most likely endings.
I would have preferred an answer that listed each scenario in order. I think we have agreed that Haven is likely to die. The Main question relates to Pinky.
Hollywood would have pinky live happily ever after. Just as she was about to meet her fate, they would realize that she was pregnant and she would live a happy life as a brood sow.
The cold realities of life ending would leave her barren and with little choice but to slaughter her. She would become ‘pork’.
In the glimmer of hope ending she would still be barren but spared the knife. A family pet - possibly with Mr .Tanner offering food to keep her alive.
I read this book as the Author’s release of the pent up emotions. It is dedicated to his father. It would be disrespectful to the author’s memories for the story to end in any way other then what did (or would have) happened in the situation. It was a cold and difficult life and I think that is the way the story will end.
