Sweater

(p125-137) What is the whole story of the sweater? (It does not first appear in Chapter 13.) What does Hollis think it means? What do you think it means?

The Twelfth picture fills in the details of the accident. List the important events from the time that Steen yelled “Jump Hollis” until the time that Hollis ran from the Stucco lady.

Back in chapter 11, in Hollis’s words, “…Just the quickest bit of color. A squirrel?...

It took me one more moment to realize that a person, maybe a fisherman, was standing there…

…Another quick step, and Steven’s sweater pulled away on a branch.”

And then in chapter 13…

“Then I trudged over to the shed for the Old Man’s saw, and found Steven’s sweater hanging on the knob, encrusted with snow. I didn’t even remember leaving it there.”

Apparently, someone hung up Steven’s sweater after finding it in the holly bushes. We highly doubt that Josey hung it up, so it’s safe to assume the fisherman hung it up. All I’m wondering is who the fisherman is.

1. The car tumbles down the hill, the two still in it.
2. Weakly, Steven tries to tell Hollis something.
3. Hollis goes towards home, and sees Izzy and the Old Man. Hollis then tell’s the two to come to the mountain.
4. Hollis and Steven go to the emergency room. Hollis gets a few stitches. Stevens’s condition is unknown.
5. The Regans bring Hollis back to their house.
6. Hollis writes the note, and runs off.

(p 127), Hollis “found Steven’s sweater hanging on the knob (of the shed), encrusted with snow.”
“I didn’t remember leaving it there?”

At the end of the chapter she was thinking about being discovered and thought about seeing the fisherman one day. (p 131) “It was then I remembered: Steven’s sweater, a flash of green in the snow as I backed away from the fisherman that day.” Back in chapter 11 she had been enjoying fishing when she saw the fisherman and panicked a bit. (p 109) “The pole slipped out of my hands as I lurched backward toward the holly bushes. Another quick step and Steven’s sweater pulled away on a branch.”

How did the sweater get from the branch to the knob on the door? She didn’t do it. Josie might have but would not remember so it was not even worth asking. What are the other possibilities?

Crash Timeline:
- Truck rolls
- Steven was unconscious
- Hollis slipped out of the car and headed back to the house.
- Old Man and Izzy saw her along the road as they were returning
- Old Man first reaction was to be mad at Steven.
- Rescuers took Steven and Hollis to the hospital. Minor injuries for Hollis
- She ran before the next morning. (Taking blame for the accident in a note.)
- She went back to the stucco lady.
- When told about Steven’s injuries she said she never wanted to go back.
- She ran from the Stucco lady a short time late.

The key event was the second to last. She said she never wanted to go back or see the Regan’s again but offered no explanation. Why didn’t she want to go back? How do you think others interpreted that reaction?
